The Question of Origin and Socio-Legal Status of
“Udvornici” in the Context of Simonis de Kéza Gesta Hungarorum

Abstract: The study focuses on the medieval royal service population
known as the udvornici, emphasising their early development in the 11th and 12th
centuries. Using the only known narrative source that directly refers to this
social group, it compares the origins and legal status of udvornici with the
evidence found in the earliest Hungarian law codes of the period. In addressing
the origin of this dependent social group, the study engages with the broader
discourse on personal freedom and slavery during the formation of the Kingdom of
Hungary. By formulating new research hypotheses, it aligns with current trends
in medieval social history and critically revisits the theory of udvornici
originating from war captives.
