Ironworks Business of Count Emanuel Andrássy from the 1860s to 1880s

Abstract: The presented study deals with the business of Count Emanuel
Andrássy in the iron and mining industry in Hungary. Andrássy was among the most
prominent representatives not only of his family, but also established himself
as a successful industrial entrepreneur. From the 1860s until his death in 1891,
he acquired by purchase several blast furnaces in the Slaná river valley, which
he successfully operated and supplied the largest ironworks and refineries in
the country with pig iron. In addition, he participated in the establishment of
new ironworks and mines in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, he became the
president of the Austro-Hungarian Blast Furnace Company, which founded the
Sofienhütte ironworks in Moravská Ostrava, and he was also a co-founder of the
largest Hungarian iron ore mine in Rudabánya in the Borsod County.
