Parallel Readings: Bessarabia and the Republic of
Moldova in the Romanian and Russian Historical Narratives

Abstract: The article discusses the Russian-Romanian dispute and the
conflicting claims regarding the belonging of historical Bessarabia (Republic of
Moldova), from the opposing perspectives of competing national narratives. The
author specifically emphasises the connection between official discourses (structured
and conditioned by frequent changes of political regimes, but also by the
repeated border shifts and revisions) and the narratives developed on the
scholarly / academic, cultural, and educational levels. The paper argues that
border territories contested by two (and more) national projects—and the
struggles over their belong- ing—represent essential elements of the narratives
through which collective identities are shaped and reshaped. The competing
historical narratives concerning Bessarabia are viewed as an important element
structuring the current relations between the Russian Federation and Romania.
These narratives also have a significant impact upon the present situation in
the Republic of Moldova.
