Historický časopis, 52, 2, 2004, pp. 239–246, Bratislava.

The author presents critical views on the approach of older Slovak historiography to the historical process because it was mostly descriptive and concentrated on facts and devoted its attention to national narrative with the emphasis on political history. But recently other topics have been dealt with, such as religious history, Judaism, current history and so on, as well as new concepts, such as investigation of identities, historical memory and historical stereotypes.

Historický časopis, 52, 2, 2004, pp. 247–260, Bratislava.

This study presents a critical view of historical Slovak Studies in North America. The last decade has witnessed less interest in Slovak history while more space has been devoted to political science. Individual dissertations do not archieve a corresponding standard and remain unpublished. Politically and ideologically based viewpoints and theoretical and methodological misconceptions still prevail in the older historiography.

Historický časopis, 52, 2, 2004, pp. 269–280, Bratislava.

The author deals with some surveys on Slovak history where nationalism or the national narrative prevails. He deals with the change in the research on nationalism since the beginning of the nineties, when the previous “revivalist“ conception, based more-or-les on the conception of the exceptional character of Slovak nationalism, was being abandoned. However, the research on nationalism in the European context is not generally accepted.

ZAVACKÁ, M.: The modern Slovak historiography on the political of the 20th century with special reference to totalitarian regimes.

Historický časopis, 52, 2, 2004, pp. 281–290, Bratislava.

The author presents an analysis of modern Slovak historiography on political history of the 20th century. She identifies the width of the investigated issue and diversity of the problems and reflects nonexistence of synthetic works on political history of the 20th century. The author advocates the need for wide international and inter-disciplinary cooperation and the need for deeper comaparison with world historiography, as well as with that of the smaller countries of the former Soviet block.

KAMENEC, I.: Some Remarks on the Historiography of the Two Totalitarian Regimes in Slovakia.

Historický časopis, 52, 2, 2004, pp. 291–294, Bratislava.

The two totalitarian regimes, fascist and communist, that determined 50 years of the history of Slovakia in the 20th century to a crucial extent, have not only permanently attracted the attention of Slovak historiography but also considerably, for the main part negatively, influenced it. Therefore its criticism is justified even though at times somewhat one-sided. At the analysis of these two totalitarian regimes historiography inevitably comes to their comparation where a number of common, sometimes surprisingly identical, traits can be found. The contemporary Slovak historiography often faces even attempts at the additional apology of both of them. These attempts once follow pragmatic ideological purposes, another time they have their source in nostalgic, emotionally determined “remembrance of things past“.

ŠVORC, P.: Slovak historiography and regional histories of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Historický časopis, 52, 2, 2004, pp. 295–308, Bratislava.

The present study deals with the role and significance of regional historical research within Slovak historiography. The author emphasizes the fact that regional history has been considered a subsidiary and less significant element in Slovak historiography. This also has been identified in less publication possibilities for research results in key journals. However, without substantial regional research the image of Slovak history is not complete and in many aspects it is the condition for futher development of knowledge.

KOVÁCS, É.: The gap between de longue durée and microstoria: Example Komárom/Komárno/Komorn in the period between the wars.

Historický časopis, 52, 2, 2004, pp. 309–316, Bratislava.

Using the analysis of sociocultural blending of society in multiethnic Komárno, the author illustrates the opportunities, as well as the limits of historical research in a small region. Isolated investigation of ethnic minorities in such a region might result in distortion. But the risk in taking the minority out of its wider national context should also be taken into account.

Historický časopis, 52, 2, 2004, pp. 331–346, Bratislava.

The study analyses Slovak historiography in connection with social history of the 19th and 20th centuries. Historically older resources used to depict the Slovaks as farmers and people living mostly in villages. Therefore many works were devoted to the problems of villages and farmers. The literature still gives priority to the ideological approach. Schematic character of class division and investigation of every day life have only been started.

The study presents some final notes on the discussion about Slovak historiography. The author highlights the problems “depolitization“ of Slovak history, as well as the fact that many ideas suggested at conferences and in miscellanies have not been finalized, for example in books.
