Topologies of the Holocaust in the East Slovak Countryside. Historický časopis, 2021, 69, 4, pp. 601–625, Bratislava. Abstract: Placing my investigation into the historically multi-ethnic and multi-religious small towns and villages of the former Šariš-Zemplín County in eastern Slovakia during the Second World War, I examine ideas and policies associated with civilizing the countryside, as voiced and introduced by Hlinka’s Slovak People’s Party. Building on what is now a growing scholarship on the topographies and topologies of the Holocaust, I reconstruct here how plans and programs to raise living standards in the east of the country, including a policy entitled “caring for the Slovak village,” hastened the further exclusion of local Jews from what had been a joint social space and physical place. Doing so, I manifest how the “beautifying” of Slovak villages included “cleansing” these from the Jews, and how the process, while orchestrated from above, had its own local dynamics. More generally, my work makes a case for an integrated social history of the Holocaust in eastern Slovakia, one that shows how the social and economic “uplifting” was intertwined with the robbing and murdering of local Jews. Resumé: Die Topologie des Holocausts in der ostslowakischen Landschaft, Ich untersuche Ideen und Maßnahmen im Zusammenhang mit der Zivilisierung des ländlichen Raums, wie sie von Hlinkas Slowakischer Volkspartei während des Zweiten Weltkriegs vertreten und umgesetzt wurden. Hierbei konzentrierte ich mich auf die histo¬risch multiethnischen wie multireligiösen Kleinstädte und Dörfer des ehemaligen Kreises Šariš-Zemplín in der Ostslowakei. Während der Transformation des Zusammenlebens von Juden und Nicht-Juden in städtischen Siedlungen immer mehr Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet wird, wurde bisher seltener beleuchtet, wie der Holocaust kleine Städte und Dörfer in der ökonomischen und geografischen Peripherie geprägt hat. Der histo¬risch multiethnische und multireligiöse Kreis Šariš-Zemplín bietet eine einzigartige Gelegenheit, zu untersuchen, wie Koexistenz fernab der Machtzentren zurückgewiesen wurde. Aufbauend auf der mittlerweile zunehmenden Forschung zu den Topographien und Topologien des Holocaust rekonstruiere ich hier, wie Pläne und Programme zur Erhöhung des Lebensstandards in der östlichen Slowakei – einschließlich der Politik der „Pflege des slowakischen Dorfes“ – die weitere Ausgrenzung der dortigen Juden aus dem gemeinsamen sozialen wie physischen Raum beschleunigten. Auf diese Weise wird deutlich, wie die „Verschönerung“ der slowakischen Dörfer auch die „Säuberung“ von den Juden beinhaltete und wie dieser Prozess, obwohl er von oben orchestriert wurde, eine eigene lokale Dynamik besaß. Generell plädiere ich in meiner Arbeit für eine inte¬grierte Sozialgeschichte des Holocaust in der Ostslowakei, die zeigt, wie die soziale und wirtschaftliche „Förderung“ eng mit dem Ausrauben und Ermorden der ortsansässigen Juden verflochten war.
